METROPOLITAN HOSPITAL DOCTORS WIN
3-YEAR CONTRACT WITH NEW YORK
MEDICAL COLLEGE

DOCTORS COUNCIL SECURES MINIMUM INCREASE OF 12%
AND HIGHER BASE SALARIES FOR DOCS

New York, NY: Today, Doctors Council announced that doctors employed at Metropolitan Hospital, located at 1901 1st Avenue, unanimously ratified a new contract with New York Medical College.[1]  The 3-year contract provides the approximately 180 doctors at Metropolitan Hospital with a minimum of three 4% increases, totaling 12%.  The first 4% increase is retroactive to July 1, 2002, with the next two increases beginning July 1, 2003 and July 1, 2004.   In addition, the establishment of higher base salaries in this contract will result in individual increases ranging from 12% to over 30%.

“Doctors Council is very pleased to announce our second contract at Metropolitan since we first organized in 2000,” said Barry Liebowitz, M.D., President of Doctors Council.  “This contract establishes significant pay increases for our doctors and greatly strengthens the hospital’s ability to recruit and retain experienced doctors.”

Other contract highlights include the following:

                     - Doubled longevity differentials for doctors who have worked for 5-10 years,
10-15 years and for the first time, a new longevity differential for those doctors
who have worked for more than 15 years.
                    - Doctors Council became recognized as the sole and exclusive bargaining
representative for the doctors employed by New York Medical College at
                       HHC’s Generations +/Northern Manhattan network’s 3 diagnostic and
                       treatment centers.

Doctors Council is the nation's oldest and largest union of attending physicians in the United States.  On March 1, 1999 Doctors Council affiliated with the Service Employees International Union (SEIU).  As part of the affiliation, Doctors Council partnered with two of SEIU’s locals, the Committee of Interns and Residents (CIR) and the United

Salaried Physicians and Dentists (USPD) to create the National Doctors Alliance.  Since its inception, the membership of the National Doctors Alliance has increased by 2,500 for a total of 16,000 members nationwide.

An organization of doctors, by doctors, and for doctors, the National Doctors Alliance's major functions are to address issues of common concern for doctors, and to determine the best and most efficient course of action for organizing new members here and around the country.

[1] Under its affiliation agreement with the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation, New York Medical College provided doctors to Metropolitan Hospital.
