The Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act A newly introduced legislation, would effectively prevent bankruptcy as an option for many families, and make bankruptcy far more punitive for those who do file. Most bankruptcies are caused by illness or job loss - often both - not reckless spending habits. Yet the proposed bankruptcy legislation would erect barriers that would keep many middle class families from qualifying for bankruptcy protections, and leave those who do qualify with far less protection than at present. This would leave many debtors with severely compromised access to medical care. An ally of ours, Physicians for a National Health Program (PNHP), opposes the proposed bill and we ask you to lend your support. We ask you to sign a petition against The Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act of 2005 (S. 256) that would change the federal bankruptcy laws.
